How do I get into single user mode?

I'm trying to reset my Admin account password and it wants me to go into single user mode.

So I turn off my PC, then turn it back on and hit the APPLE and S key and nothing happens. It just loads OS X as usual.

 
It is command-S. If you're running boot camp, you may try holding down the option key, picking the mac partition manually then trying command-s
