How do I get IE to open in the full window

I think there's a simple fix for this; I just don't remember it. 😱

When I first set up Windows 2000 on this machine and went online, the IE browser window opened up at 'full size.' Now every time I launch IE, it opens in a smaller window (about 1/3 the normal size). It just takes one click, of course, to expand it to full size (with the middle button in the upper right corner), but it's mildly annoying to have to do this all the time. 😛

Can anyone remind me how to fix it so that IE opens up in a full-size window everytime I launch it?

PS: (I'm using IE6 SP1 if it matters.) And yeah, I know about Firefox. I plan to check that out soon.

Doesn't it open in the same size as it was last closed? If you maximize it and then click file > close. Then next time it's opened it should be maximized.

You can also change the properties of the shortcut to run maximized.

That's what I thought, but I click File > Close and when I open it again, it's still the small window. 🙁

And I tried rite-clicking the desktop icon and then selecting Properties, but I'll be darned if I can see anywhere to click to get it run maximized.

Bloody hell -- I fixed this once a long time ago and I just can't remember how to do it! 😛

EDIT: fixed typo

How are you starting IE? Right click on that icon, select Properties and in the Run box (most of the way down) select Maximized.

I know what you are talking about. it happens to me. I don't know how to fix it, but would love to know also.

when I open IE from say the quick launch, it goes fullscreen, but anything popped up opens in a windowed screen.

Exactamundo.

I can rite-click the icons in the Quick Launch toolbar, choose Properties, click the Shortcut tab, and choose Run in Maximized Window (via the drop-down menu).

But if I rite-click a shortcut on the desktop (which is where I normally launch from), and click Properties, there is no Shortcut tab and thus no option to choose Run in Maximized Window. All that comes up with, say, my Anandtech.com shortcut on the desktop is three tabs: General, Security and Web Document. And none of these show Run or anything like it. 😕

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro, BTW, if it matters. Anyone else have any ideas? (Oh, and thanks, Kasper4christ, but F11 isn't what I need.)

START > Programs > and then Rightclick on Internet Explorer ; there you can choose under "properties" to always open IE maximized.

does not work

It did for me. But I had to close all open windows first, then do the procedure above. Now when launch IE from the desktop icon, it opens in a maximized window. 🙂

However ... I still can't get any of my other desktop shortcuts (to Web pages) to open maximized. I even tried deleting my Anandtech.com shortcut, then opening IE in its now-maximized window and creating a new shortcut. No go. The shortcut opens in a window about 1/3 the normal size. 🙁

I even went to the Desktop folder in my C drive and rite-clicked the Web page shortcuts. As before, a different type of Properties window opens and there's no option to open in Normal, Minimized or Maximized. Bloody hell again! 😛

If I open IE from quick launch, the start menu, or desktop, it opens maximized. popups are what I have problems with.

What about desktop shortcuts to Web pages (other than IE)?

Your problem might be caused by damaged registry keys, try doing this:
Internet Explorer opens off screen, or tiny, or minimized, or the window will not move
If your taskbar is set to Autohide, turn the setting off and then maximize the problem window. While the window is maximized, increase the height of your taskbar from one row to two. The maximized window will automatically resize itself to fit into the smaller area available with a taller taskbar. Then, return the taskbar to its normal single row and allow the maximized window to resize once more. This will make Windows re-calculate window size and boundaries, overwriting registry keys that may be damaged.

If the affected window is partially off screen, so that the Minimize, Maximize, Restore, and Close buttons are hidden, you can access the same options by clicking on the Internet Explorer icon on the far left edge of the Internet Explorer title bar, or by right-clicking on the Internet Explorer button on the taskbar.

If resizing your Taskbar does not work, run Regedit and remove the following registry key values which are most likely corrupt. Do not delete the entire key, just the last word which will appear in the right hand pane.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

Then reboot.
