how do I get good performance with Quake 3

Trifecta

Senior member
Hi,

I have a AMD K6-2 450 and a voodoo 3 3000 system that I am trying to set up for a freind.

I have heard that voodoo 3 3000's + AMD K6-450s should run quake 3 at about 39-42 frames per second, yet I am getting about 25...

any way I can speed up the performance?

Thanks

tweak the game by lowerin all the graphics, forcing player models, etc, etc and you should be able to get
60-90. there are configs out there already, i lost the link, but u can search for them and download and use them.

im at school at the moment so i cant double check if this is the exact right command, but try changning the r_picmap value in your config.

i will double check that that is the right command when i get home.

<EDIT>i just double checked. te command is actually r_picmip. the lower the number the faster it will run (and the uglier it will look🙂).

thanks

is there a particular release that is faster than the others?

I know everyone says to stay away from v. 1.25

For the absolute fastest config in existance you should download the Locki config. I have a link to it in this thread which I started.

However, remember not expect miracles even from this config in the case of your system. That K6 totally blows for 3D gaming.

Wth a K6-2, you shouldn't expect more than about 30-40 FPS even when you lower the visual quality. The K6-2 is an ok processor, but it has a weak FPU and little cache, which means that it woon't be anything special in games. THe K6-2+ gets almost 2x the FPS just from its larger cache and the new Athlon 3dNow instructions.
With some tweaking, you should get it very playable though.
