How do I get DTS?

Hey guys, so I've got my Z-5500's and liking what I'm hearing so far. However when I was watching a movie I had the choice between dts and DD, DD worked fine, but dts was nothing. I'm only using the DVD software that came with my Radeon, which I noticed flashed a DD logo... so maybe it can't send the dts out? If not, what software do you guys recommend for watching DVDs?

Or is something wrong with the way I have things set up? (should I have DD encoding turned on for the soundcard when watching a DVD?)

the more expensive versions of dvd softwares (windvd, powerdvd, etc.) include DTS decoders. the audigy 2 also has a built in hardware DTS decoder. i'm not sure if SS has a hardware DD decoder, but I'm sure it does not have a DTS decoder.

The Z-5500 can decode dts, but I still need a software app that can send it the dts feed?

I think the z-5500s have hardware DTS decoding. Can you send a AC3 stream to your speakers? (passthrough)

EDIT: I really don't know much about DVD playing programs.

I think VLC media player would allow you to send a DTS stream but I'm not sure.

send the audio straight through in software. it has to have the setting. otherwise the software decoder will determine whether u have the ability or not...

Yeah there should be an option in the DVD player's menus to send the audio to an external source. Then just have the Z-5500s decode it (which they should do automatically I think).

Hmm, I'm looking for a setting but this app is pretty basic. What about the SS? Should I turn of DD encoding (for DTS or DD) when watching DVD's? I only had it turned on to listen to mp3's on all 5.1

Turn it off. You want it to do AC3 passthrough or if it doesn't have that, set it to PCM.

Maybe you need to have digital out - like with either optical or coaxial (spdif).

You have a choice of having either your soundcard do the decoding, or windows, or your logitech control panel. I would imagine that you need one of the two digital inputs on the back of the z-5500 control panel to be plugged in - then you use the buttons to select the appropriate decoding. You are probably doing your decoding on your soundcard when watching movies right now.

I would imagine the best quality would actually be to use your sound card to do all the decoding, and send analog signals to the Logitech control panel- because an Audigy or better card will decode with better quality probably. When your soundcard is decoding surround signals and sending analog to the logitech, set the logitech control panel to "6 CH Direct" with your "effect" button. This will send the signals straight thru without adding anything to them- and you'll hear the sound as it is intended.

I think he has soundstorm hooked up digitally and it's unable do decode DTS streams according to oupei.

I should have mentioned that earlier, I'm using the Optical coax out on the SS. Anyway, I'm trying VLC now and the Logitech control pod is detecting a dts digital signal, so that's a good sign - only problem is it sounds terrible!! It's choppy and incomprehendable! Sounds like a toilet flushing with the sound cut out every 2 seconds... Hmm... I'll keep playing in VLC.

VLC is kind of choppy for me too, I don't know what the deal is.

At least We know that your setup is capable of working now. You just need to find a decent program allowing you to send a DTS stream.
