How do I get Doom III to run at 1680x1050?

I've heard it supports widescreen but I don't see a setting for widescreen resolutions. Can anyone help me out here?

You have to edit the config file... set r_mode to -1, r_customWidth to 1680, and r_customHeight to 1050 (I believe). :)

Edit: Or you could just change those variables from the console when you're in the game...then follow it up with a vid_restart to apply the settings.

Thanks I'll give that a try.

I wonder why they wouldn't just include it in the settings so people could easily access it.

you could also put those in your shortcut to do it every time unless doom will save it after you do it the first time

What's with all the hate for doom3? I really enjoyed it, and YES, I played it to the end. Yes, I liked HL2 better, but that doesn't detract from doom3, which was QUITE fun.

I've actually had Doom III since the day it was released but haven't got around to playing it yet. I've messed around with it a little and from what I've seen it looks like it's going to be really cool.

Heh, why do you feel the need to put others taste in games down?

Heh, John Carmack is a multi-multi millionaire whose string of success makes you, me, and 99.9% of the other people on the planet look like unwashed apes scratching our asses in the jungle, hoping it doesn't rain.

Ok I got it to work. However, the menus look squished. Is this actually giving me a true widescreen image or is it just squishing it? Or are the menus just squished and the actual in game stuff is true native widescreen? For example, when you first start up the game the 3D planet spinning in the middle of the menus isn't an actual circle anymore. I'm hoping it's just the menus that aren't being displayed properly but I'm really not sure.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure 2d overlays will get stretched when you go widescreen (or squashed, however you look at it).

The menus do get squished in Doom3 when you set it to widescreen, but the game plays correctly. It was left out in the instructions above, but you also have to set the aspect ratio via the r_aspectRatio flag to get the correct aspect ratio.

Have you altered the Aspect Ratio ?

In the readme for the Doom3 1.1 Patch ...

Quote:
RENDERING
- r_aspectRatio now uses 0, 1, or 2 (4:3, 16:9, 16:10)

So in the DoomConfig.cfg edit the line seta r_aspectRatio "0" line for your screen ratio. .... 2

Hope it helps ...

...pulled straight from Paddy the Walk's post on http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/fo...&postorder=asc&highlight=doom3&start=0

that site is must read for any WS monitor owners.

Thanks I'll give that a try.

I wonder why they wouldn't just include it in the settings so people could easily access it.
The intersting thing is that that Doom3 truely does support WS properly (since the 1.1 patch), but they just didn't make it accessable. An odd choice if you ask me.

Thanks for the help. Yeah it doesn't make any sense if you ask me. Oh well, I got it working correctly so I guess that's all that matters.

Thanks,

Because most users dont have monitors which can support this resolution much less a widescreen resolution.

You ever play HL2? Valve implemented WS support as it should be done... You pick your aspect ratio and then you select your resolution. Very well done. Riddick on the otherhand has kind of a quirky interface where you pick your resolution and your aspect ratio independent of each other.

I really don't understand this desire to defend lax developers for not including WS support and easy accessability. It may not be extremely widespread, but once Dell offers products that support something it isn't exactly on the fringe anymore either. WS is the future... You should know that, HDTVMan.

Well said, I couldn't agree more. Yeah, Valve did a good job implementing widescreen into HL2/CS:S. Everyone should follow their example.
