HOW DO I GET DIRECTX8.1 ON HL2!!!

Please, vividly describe what I have to do in order to change the DirectX API used in Half-Life 2. I just can't figure out how. Help would be greatly appreciated.

1 . run halflife 2
2 . open up the console
3. type in "mat_dxlevel 81" without quotation marks
4. have fun

You need certain hardware for this to work, right? I have a Geforce 4 MX, changed it to 8.1, and tried to change the water to "Reflect world." I hit apply and loaded a game, but upon going back to the options the DirectX hardware was back to 7 and the water was "Simple reflection."

That's because your video card is dx7. You can't play at higher levels than hardware permits, which is the reason they have multiple levels of play in hl2. A geforce4 mx is basically a geforce2 in disguise.
