1. Learn how to manipulate macronutrients to reach your goals and shape your body to look precisely the way you want it to.
2. Start reading and grasp the basics of bodybuilding, so that you can choose a workout program that best suits your needs.
3. Find out what equipment will be required to make the most of 1 and 2, and purchase it, or find a gym that has it.

Of course, before you even start with all this, there are several things that you have to understand. It will take a lot of determination to put on, say, 20 or 30 pounds of muscle weight. You will have to make sacrifices. You will have to make changes to your life. You will have to go through lots, and i mean LOTS of pain, both physical and mental. Make sure you are ready for all this and more before you start, because if you're not, you will simply end up wasting your time. If you're ready, start here.

Go to the website i linked and click on FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. Sooo much useful information there. Just start at the top and work your way down, read everything you can. Take your time - every hour spent reading will end up saving you weeks if not months in the end. Post on their forums as well, just ask away. A lot of great people there who are willing to help.

Hey bud, head on over to Musclemag.com. Check out their forums. A WEALTH of information.

Anyway, it is tougher for you since you are a vegetarian but certainly not impossible. Do you eat fish? If so then invest in Tuna, if not then your primary source of protein will come from Soy products.

I think Whey protein supplements would be fine too, but don't quote me on that, I haven't really looked into what would be ok for a vegetarian to eat as far as protein goes.

You will need to eat a lot. 5-7 meals a day. Lots of good carbs, proteins, and fats.

You will also need to train hard. Low Reps (I prefer 4-6), heavy weights. FOCUS ON Compound Exercises!! These would include Squats, Deadlifts, and Bench Press. Worry about curling 500lbs. later. The exercises I mentioned are the best for building overall LEAN BODY MASS. While you should still incorporate other exercises, these three are by far the most important.

One more thing, get lots of rest. Minimum 7hrs a night. I prefer 8-9.

You grow outside the gym, not while working out......keep that in mind.

thats great for adding real muscle, but what i get by "buff" is that he wants to look good for the ladies. In which case he's going to have to do abs, more chest, and tri's/bi's as well.

You can start by going to the gym in your spare time, rather than coming here.

I'll have to politely disagree.

1.) Abs for one primarily come from having a low-bodyfat %. Yes, one should do ab exercises, but without having a low bf% that "six-pack" will never show.
2.) By doing Bench Press you are working your Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps
3.) By doing Deadlifts you are working your Back, Traps, Shoulders, and Biceps

I agree that anyone working out should not totally neglect doing Bicep Curls, or Close-Grip Bench (Tricep Exercise), but those should come secondary to the compound exercises that will yes, add real muscle.

Oh yeah, and as for training-

I would suggest doing a 3 or 4 day split. Since you are a beginner I would probably do a 3 day split at first to ease into it.

A very popular 3-day split is-
Mon- Chest/Triceps/Shoulders
Tue- Rest
Wed- Legs
Thurs- Rest
Fri- Back/Biceps
Sat & Sun- REST

Don't listen to him. Knowing EXACTLY what you're doing is critical, and the net is THE place to learn it. Most people you'll find in the gyms don't really know what they're doing, so just going up to someone and doing everything they tell you wouldn't be a good idea. You'll be surprised how many people who LOOK like they know their stuff don't even know how much protein they're taking in daily.

You know, the most beneficial thing he could actually do is GO TO THE FREAKING GYM AND TALK TO A DIETICIAN/PHYSICAL TRAINER.

The net may be great for information, but it all it does is show the know-how. A PT/Dietician can actually set up a plan, provide motivation, and get him going.

I'm agreeing with Centaur6 on that one. A vast majority of "trainers" don't have a clue what they are talking about. 99% of the information I have learned about diet, training, supplements has come from the internet. I wish I had done more research before I started working out.....I would have made a lot more progress.

EXRX.net is a great place that shows examples of exercises
Musclemag.com like I said before has a wealth of information and a ton of people who are more than happy to help you out with any questions need...but remember, the search function is your friend! ;)
