How do I get a broken OEM HDD replaced?

I have an OEM Quantum LM 30 gig hard drive. It died on me... bad. It will not detect in BIOS and makes horrible grinding noises when powered. I purchased the drive awhile back from Fry's electronics. I checked out Maxtor's web site for product support (since Maxtor acquired Quantum)

This is what was posted on the site:

The limited, non-transferable warranty on products sold through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is extended only to the OEM that purchases the products directly from Maxtor or Quantum. Therefore, owners of OEM manufactured equipment containing a Maxtor or Quantum product must contact the OEM or the place of purchase for warranty service.

So does that mean I go to Fry's to have it replaced? I purchased the drive on 11/18/00. The receipt says I have a 3-year warranty. Do I contact Maxtor, or do I go to Fry's? Man.. I've never had a hard drive die on me before. Thanks!

throw it through fry's window, drives aren't supposed to ... oh wait, they always do.:)

best thing is to walk into fry's with hdd and receipt AND PRINTOUT of what maxtor's site says. Take it to the mgr. if needed, they are the ones to go to.

Call Maxtor and get a RMA #. They will ask you for the model and serial #s on the drive. You will also need a credit card. They will send out a replacement drive to you and I think you have 15 days to send back the bad drive or they charge you for the replace drive on your credit card. That's it. Had to RMA a 30 gig drive a while back because it had bad sectors on the boot block. They are very easy to deal with.

I agree with santar72. Call Maxtor or do the rma at the website. Their CS is really good. It doesn't matter whether it is OEM or retail, Maxtor warranties their drives for 3 years.

Worse comes to worse, then go back to fry's.

alluu is right,
as far as i know all maxtor and quantum drives come with a 3-year-warranty.
just check it out on the maxtor homepage since maxtor recently bought quantum and is therefore doing quantum rma too
