right now im in dos, and I type format C:, andi t odenst work.

Any other way?
The biggest problem with win xp is the fact I cant play games.

Are you trying to format over XP? Here's the steps:
boot off of the XP CD
Select install XP
when you are asked which partition to install XP on, you'll see an option to format the selected partition
do it
and you'll be on your way 🙂

BTW - wrong forum 🙂

I guess, after you format the partition from the XP boot CD - you could just exit out of the installation and have a clean drive 🙂

Yeah, with XP's boot record, you won't be able to install "previous" versions of windows without fdisking the master boot record first. XP apparently recognizes every other Windows version as a "previous version" and won't let you install.

Go with my original list. 😎

What do you mean d: went to c: ? did you try booting again with your DOS startup diskette? Is your c: listed in CMOS setup?

Okay, I got me all setup. But noiw whenever I startup, it starts detecting new hardware then Cmdninst has an error, so I have to close it, as ignore doesnt function. and thne my comp just sits there

Well... not really.

The issue isn't the boot record, it's the partition table. (Which, to be fair, is part of the master boot record.) In the partition table is a filesystem indicator. If the filesystem is NTFS, Win9x can't use those partitions, so those OSes simply ignore those partitions to prevent you from accidentally deleting your data on those partitions. You need to FDISK and delete non-DOS partitions to get around it.

I'd like to know how this is in the wrong forum, considreing this is a process that is different from the previous Win OS'es.
