How do I format a Win2k machine, Win98/ME boot disks not working

Urm - "NTDLR not found" is the "command.com" equivalent W2K needs for booting. Usually disks formatted in W2K have this error-message when ppl try & use them as boot-disks.

Sounds like your floppy needs the system-files (if it *IS* the floppy giving you this message) - or your W2K install (or rather - boot section) is shafted. May be rescue with a healthy copy of NTDLR, but no guarantees here.

Again - what is it exactly you are trying to do - and what with? 🙂.

Don't know what exactly your trying to do but uf your BIOS supports it you should be able to boot right from the W2K CD Rom

I installed 2k on my dads machine and now he wants ME back as his ISP can't connect using 2K, well that's what the isp said over the phone but I don't understand how there no. doesn't work with 2k, it was working for a while then just wouldn't connect so he called em up and they said it don't work on 2k, so i need to format and install Win ME.

So, how can I format?

Thanks

What's your dad's connection/ISP? I find it silly that the ISP says the internet connection is not supported by Win2k. We must get this internet connection issue resolved, because WinME is utter sh1t compared to Win2k.

That's exactly how I feel, when the tech guy told him it doesn't work under 2k I just burst out laughing.

I think he means the sh1tty software on the installation disc doesn't work in 2k, u put the disc in and it tells u it doesn't work.

When u dial it starts as normal and then the modem tones go all funny.

The dialup no. needs to either be plugged into this small box before the phone line or nedes 4 no.s stuck in front of the phone no.

It was working fine about a week ago, when it started going funny first my Dad was told by them they had server problems.

Thanks guys, any ideas?

ISP is NTL btw

If the partition is an NTFS partition, you'll have to delete and recreate the partition before WinME will allow you to format it.

Of course, going from Win2K to Win98 is a big step in the wrong direction. Let's work on getting your dad connected to the Internet with Win2K. That's the REAL problem you want to solve, no?

That is nonsense. You don't even need the disks from any ISP (unless it is crap like AOL or Gateway's using VPN).

Just go into Network and Dialup COnnections and create a new dialup. All you need is the phone number you are dialing to, your user name, and the password. Save that to your desktop or taskbar. Rename the link to NTL connect (or whatever) and launch away.

blam,

Ive done that, but as soon as my Dad heard Win2k was the problem he has it in his mind that is right. I will have another fiddle trying to get it to connect, might even try the dialup on my comp but I think it's fussy as to which line it dials out on. I will get back to you, thanks for all the help.

The connection works! Tried it again and it connects fine, must've been server problems.

My dad rang them up and gave 'em a right earfull:Q

The thing that pisses me off is misinformation from 'tech support' people is all too common, if these people were actually trained to support their own products then troubleshooting for everbody (particualy the comp illiterate) would be much easier.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, much appreciated.

I'd still like to know how u format a 2k machine, I can't find the 2k discs.

You can format with Win9x boot disks. You just have to FDISK and delete the non-dos[/b] partition.

Then the boot disks are bad or incorrectly configured. There is also the possibility that you have the BIOS set to boot from the hard drive before the floppy.

I had a similar problem with a kk266 motherboard and win 2k
set jumper to 133MHz for memory and no video ,no nothing
changed jumper to 100MHz and install began.

Still get error "cannot find file i386\ntkrnlmp.exe .hit any key..."
file exsists in i386 folder with .ex_ extension, damn MS.

The disks aren't bad and it is set to floppy first.

Mr UK,
Last time I worked in DOS, if command.com was on a floppy and the BIOS was set to boot from a floppy, with an x86 chip the machine will boot to the floppy and read whatever you put on it. The machine can't think...it just reads what you give it. Psychoholic is right...your boot disk isn't bootable. Put it in another machine and check what's on it. Go to a Win95/98 machine and make a rescue disk. That will boot and then you can fdisk or format or whatever you want.

MrWhiteUK, using a 98 boot disk to Fdisk and Format have always worked for me, and should always work for anyone... however, there is a way to do it through 2k, not using a 98 boot disk. If your BIOS allows you to boot from the CD rom, u can boot off the w2k installation cd and go into Repair Options, then Recovery Console (DOS). Alternatively, if you can't boot from a cd, you can make setup disks to boot from. However, if you can boot into 2k, which you can, open a command console, Start>Run>cmd. Insert the windows 2000 cd, go into the /i386 folder and type "winnt32/cmdcons" this will allow the recovery console to be a startup feature if you press F8 during the windows load.

Once in the recovery console, you have access to Fdisk and format. I've never removed 2k from a machine this way, but doing it through the recovery console should work.

I don't suppose someone could send me a .zip of the contents of a win98 boot disk could they??

PM me if you can and I will give u my e-mail.

The WInME boot disk I have comes up with the ntldr not found message on mine and my dads comps, both win2k.

you just delete the ntfs partitions. boot off the win2k CD. then go into it like you are gonna install it and just remove all the partitions and then quit the install.

It sounds like both systems have been set to look at the hard drive first in the boot sequence. If that's the case you have to solve that first. I generally avoid ME but if I remember correctly it doesn't look for ntldr. Which would mean it's still looking at the hard drive. Check your BIOS.
