How do I fix the System Restore Service?

I'm in a bit of a bind. For some reason, I can no longer run the System Restore Service in WInXP Pro.

It's set for automatic startup, but cannot start due to these errors, as reported in the event log:

The System Restore initialization process failed.

The System Restore Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.

If I try to start the System Restore Service manually, I get the message:
Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.

That path error is very odd. From the service properties, I see the path is specified as:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

I've checked, and svchost is right there where it should be in C:\WINDOWS\System32. Also, several other services seem to use the exact same executable path, and they start fine.

From what I can tell, the only dependency for the SR service is the RPC service, and that is automatically started, and it runs fine.

Any ideas how to fix this?
