okay i'm stumped....for some reason, my liteon burner has been acting very strange lately. when i install games from it (since my dvd drive died on me), the cpu utilization goes up to 99%, and the same thing for burning cds as well. i'm thinking the problem might be the dma, but i have my ide channels to use dma if available, so i don't kno what the problem is.

have you checked the DMA settings under system properties, system devices, Direct memory access controller settings?
Try setting them to checked, DMA reserve buffer, 64 Kbytes. And restrict Dma transfers to memory below 16 mb. See what happens.

Oh yea, Have you added any temperature reducing software lately? This wll sometimes show high cpu usage.

ok i installed the via bus master utility and i'm sure that dma is on for my drive, so i don't know what else could be the problem. and i haven't installed any temp reducing software either.

if you have a win98 or winme boot disk, try booting into dos with cdrom support and copying some big files to your hard drive. this will hopefully show you whether there is a problem with the drive itself or if its a software problem

if this isnt an option, try putting the drive into another system and see if it works like normal
