How do I fix IE 5.5 window closes on download?

There seems to be an annoying bug introduced in IE 5.5. When I click on a link to download a file the download dialog will open and the browser window will close behind it. This is HIGHLY annoying because I have to open up a new instance of IE and search through my history to find where I was and not all pages get saved in history. Anyone know how to stop the window from closing?

Blargh! I must be the only one with this problem! That makes two I have that no one else seems to have. The second being that sometimes I try to click on the menu in IE and the menus won't come down which is only fixed by shifting focus to another window and back again for them to work. Although the menu bug was in 5.0 too... no matter how many times I formatted or which Windows OS I used. My computer must hate me. :(

You are not alone, and I have both of these bugs as well. The menu problem only happens intermittently and is not that big a deal, but I think all installations of IE 5.x suffer from it.

As for the issue of the window closing when you DL a file, yes it is irritating, but my band-aid fix is always to open the DL link in a new window by SHIFT-clicking on the link. Still annoying, though.

Hmmm.. shift-clicking... nice! I learn something new everday :D This is the most useful thing I've learned since I heard about Minimize All Windows on the taskbar. Thank you for the tip.

Yes, the menu thing was irritating, now this closing window business just plain sucks!

I guess it's better than crashes per hour with Nutscrape.

Hmkay ... I got all you bugs, and some more. If by some reason you get a "Cannot contact server", press reload and the page loads, the title doesn't change. The second one appeared when I uninstalled IE 5.5. This one is nasty. If all windows are maximized, you can't change through them. Clickin on the tasbar won't work. I eventually reinstalled IE 5.5, and got those bugs bag.

I registered for the forum just to write what I think of this lame piece of software.

Are you guys using the non-beta version.

I use IE 5.5 a lot, often with several copies of it up at once, and have had no problems. However, with the beta 5.5 I thought it was to buggy and went back to 5.0 until the non-beta of 5.5 was released.

I'm using the non-beta IE version 5.50.4134.0600 on Windows 2000 Professional. I'm finding myself liking Opera more and more.
