In some situations it's entirely possible to have a legal copy without the case and printed CD-Key. Where I work we have licensed copies like the Select License that lets us duplicate and distribute WinXP to anyone in the company. The CD Key is on a photocopied sheet of paper included in the 10pack of WinXP disks.

So in the off chance that you are in a similar situation, I suggest contacting the department you order the CDs from.

is there a good reason why these keys are not put on the cds themselves? i HATE having to dig through all my crap to find some old cd case.

Because then they couldn't just mass produce the cds as easily. Each one would have to be different.

Well, it'd be a pain to screen print each key indivudually onto the CDs. It's much easier to run a ton of lables (ie: a batch for the OEM copies, a batch for the retail copies, a batch for the upgrade copies) and just add them that way.

yea i guess that's true. goddamn though it's so annoying. sometimes i peel the sticker off the case and put it on the cd, but then there's this weird buzzing noise when it starts to spin.

I tend to lose CD cases, cuz I usually don't keep my CDs in them, its annoying as hell cuz I lost my CD-KEY to a few games, and to Windows 2000 Pro(freakin full version too).

That is why I make a back up copy of most of my programs and write the CD key on the disc. I also have a text file that contains them all.

I just write the key # on the CD with a Sharpie.

Works great, I usually throw everthing away as I have 100's of cd's that way if you find the cd you have the Key#'s. too bad Microsoft quit letting people know about the super-key that works on every copy of the same OS :( , but I can understand thier reason, it's like locking you car doors to keep the honest people honest.
