How do I find out what modem I have?

I need the driver for a modem on a Compaq Presario 4540. I feel like I have looked everywhere. I formatted the hard drive and do not have the driver disk and do not know where to look to find out what kind of modem it is. I have tried several different softpaqs and no luck. I also went from Win95 to 98.

If anyone could shed some light on the situation or tell me where to go I would appreciate it. Worst case is I just go buy a new modem which may not be a bad thing. I think the modem is a 33.6. The computer belongs to a friends grandmother.

So to sum it up: Need to know what modem came in that computer from factory. Markings on the card are as follows: Compaq 9752, J-3, D-V0, 94V-0, V.34, PSB226, Lucent chipset.

thanks

I connected @ 49 most all the time.. throughput aroun4.7 to 5.2 just depending on time of day.. or get cable or dsl if you can.. my comcrap had a rockwell and guess what... they dont build or support them after comcrap buys them

If you haven't done so already, go to Compaq's site and they *may* have a database of systems they sold. Otherwise, go ahead and pick up one of those free-after-rebate winmodems. Mine works fine, consumes almost no CPU, and connects me to Juno Web @ 49.2 or 52.0

You can go inside the box to your modem and obtain the "FCC ID Number" (usually on a white tag) from it. Then go to Link:

The FCC requires "almost" all modems to have a FCC ID number, and it will allow you to determine who made it (and the model, I think). Then you can locate drivers for it from several places. Here is one, and there are several others. Link:

I say "almost" because I have a U.S. Robotics 5690 modem (Model 0642) with the number 4X2USA-25314-M5-E on it (no other numbers, and yes-I bought it new). An inquiry to the fcc.gov (after I couldn't ID it) got the response: "The number you have cited appears to be an FCC Registration # (Part 68). These numbers are not listed on the web; authorized FCC ID's (Part 15) are listed." So apparently not ALL modems have an FCC ID Number on them.
