How do I find out more info about a particular IP address? (slightly network related)

Edit: I now realize that this question is probably software or technical support related instead of networking. Sorry about that. I briefly thought this was networking related as i'm running DSL. Ooops.

I have ZoneAlarm installed and I occasionally get a message saying that ZoneAlarm has blocked access to my comp from a certain IP address.

How can I find out where it's coming from or who it is?

I think that it would be interesting to find out whether a particular program or spyware on your comp is trying to "et call home" from your comp or to your comp to transmit personal info and surfing habits.

Thanks for any replies.

If you are running a non-DOS, non Mac OS pre-X OS (no Win9x, no Mac OS 9 since Im not sure if either of these OSes have the following tools):

nslookup ip address

This will show you the main hostname that the ip resolves to (ie 4.60.203.134 dsl.something.numbers.verizon.net -former ip address of my system 😛)

If that does not solve the questions:

Go to www.arin.net and do a whois on the ip. Follow the links there if it is not a US based ip. If its the fbi, freak 🙂

EDIT: Definitely a networking related question.

In Windows, here are some tools:

tracert ip.add.re.ss

nslookup ip.add.re.ss

Reverse DNS needs to be working properly for an NS lookup to work. Sadly, many ISP's are too lazy to set it up and it will not work.

And the other stuff n0cmonkey suggested.

Thanks for the info guys.

I found some sites that will trace whatever IP you give it. I just also realized that my Zone Alarm Pro also logs the IP and gives back some very interesting info. It would seem that my internet provider is keeping tabs on what i'm doing. I can't copy the info message and i'm a noob at screen capture otherwise i'd post a Zone Alarm screenshot here.

Windows Key + Print Scrn

Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> Paint

Edit -> Paste

Or is it past these steps where you get noob'd?

Nope, I was a noob from the beginning. Thanks for the instructions. Never had to do or want to do that before ... except for when the "show your desktop theme" threads come out and I want to show mine but don't know how.
