VGA is essentially the same thing as component. i have my 360 plugged into my TV with one of those just fine.

VGA is essentially the same thing as component.

Except that they're totally different. Your 360 works with it because it has circuitry internally to output YPbPr on some of the VGA pins. Some PC video cards have this as well. Most other devices do not. Any "converter" you buy for $7 is just moving pins around.

This is not a transcoder. OP, search for a "VGA box" (in the $50-100 range). That will actually take component (YPbPr) from any source and turn it into VGA that you can display on a computer monitor.

I remember that Nintendo said we'd be able to hook the dang thing up to a PC monitor

I was trying to avoid the cost of a VGA box but I just bit the bullet and ordered an X2VGA 2. £40 delivered so not breaking the bank and I actually need a switching solution for my 360 and Wii so it's a worthwhile investment for the convenience I think.
