im running xp and i tried ipconfig but my gateway router is giving me a 192.168...number. i need to find the local ip address. okay so i found it by going to dsl reports but is there a command in xp to find it? thanks.

u want ur local ip? thats the 192.168.xxx.xxx #. or do u mean u want the ip # the cable company is assigning to u? if that is the case, u need to log into ur router and check it there.

thx spanky but yes im looking for the ip the cable provided me and i tried going to my router which is a netgear rt314 but it doesnt give me the ip..it gives me the 192.168 one..i mean i found the ip on dslreports but i want to find it without having to go to dslreports.

there should be a tab or option within that webpage that will show u ur ip. look for the place on that page where u can release and renew ur ip number. if it doesn't tell u there... that be some whacked sh!znit.

The router should tell you somewhere. If not, do 'tracert somesite.com' and look for the first non 192.--- IP that is listed.

If you have the RT314, then I can help ya 🙂

1. Start > Run
2. Type "telnet ip.of.your.router" (without quotes, default is 192.168.0.1).
3. Enter your password (default is 1234, I think).
4. It should give you a menu with numbers from 1 to 24 (not continuous).
5. Type "24" (without quotes) and press enter.
6. Type "1" (no quotes) and press enter.
7. Should say WANyour:ethernet:mac:address:is:hereyour.assigned.ip.address

Voila.

You can also find it through your web browser by connecting to your router.
