I live in a pretty commercial area and I pretty clueless about the whole wireless revolution, but ive heard about people driving around in cars and able to pick up on wireless connections.

You can always drive around and ask the businesses if they have wireless and whether you can use it or not.

One sure way.

I recently started running kismet while driving around, surprised the hell out of me how many networks I found and probably 50-75% were open with no WEP at all.

I do not get it what is the big deal?

It is like watching TV with a binocular through your neighbor's window.

kismet running on my laptop, I just started it in my apt so it's pretty empty.

Also it's a client server app, so I'd assume there's more than just the ncurses UI I showed there but that's what came ready to go with the Debian package and I never looked for anything else because that one works.

Thanks for the screen shot. Have you found a way to join the wireless networks you find?

The ones without WEP are simple, most of them broadcast their SSID. I havn't tried AirSnort or anything to see if i can break WEP and get myself a WEP key yet.
