Im new with installing Linux and i wanted to just try it out.

Now they are saying i must choose the appropriate cpu generation? I have an AMD XP2600+ cpu but im not too savvy with generation names unfortunatly but i know the AT'ers here will help me out :)

thanks all

Thats true, except that the 64 bit chips are x86-64, although I guess that is still essentially the same old x86 architecture.

I586, I686, X86-64?

Everything Pentium-Pro or Pentium-2+3 inclduging Pentium-M and all their celerons are i686.

The 64 bit stuff need some thinking about, you can install either the 32 bit or 64 bit OS. Telling which one you have is easy for AMD but more difficult for Intel. Intels P4 5x0J (notice the "J") and 6x0 support EM64T, but to actually use it your mainboard and BIOS must support it, too.
