Lame question, I know, but I'm a newbie, so bear with me here. I have a Gateway 9300 laptop, and when I boot up, it says 850mhz, but when I look at Win2K's system details, it says I'm running at ~697mhz. What's going on? Any answers grately appreciated.

if you have a laptop with an 850 P3...your ~697 reading should be due to SpeedStep, which is basically your processor setting its own clockspeed to whatever is sufficient to do the workload presented to it. If you didnt have this your battery would probably last like an hour. ;) Then again I could be wrong because I hate laptops and stay away from them being that I have no use for portability and I dont like spending more to get less....and i'm out :p

What he said makes sense. If you're still not sure try using whatcpuid. That'll tell you what you have.

Yeah, if it's speedstep, all you have to do is plug in powercable and you'll get a better speed reading... When you use the battery, it try to slow down the processor to save power so it can last longer...
