how do I fade an image to white on the bottom?

Hi, all.

I hate to make a thread about this, because it seems like it should be something I can answer with Google. But, oddly, Google has turned up no help. Or maybe I don't know the proper terminology, which is preventing me from searching the web successfully.

In any case, I need to do a seemingly simple task: I have a bitmap image, and I need to fade out the bottom to white. This guide shows how to do it in Photoshop, but it assumes a familiarity with photoshop I just don't have. I need a simple way to fade out an image.

Thanks in advance!

open it in photoshop
add a new layer (ctrl+shift+N if i remember correctly)

make that new layer active by single clicking it (left mouse button)
-- if layer palette isn't there, hit F7

hit G to switch to your gradient tool (if your tools palette shows a bucket instead of a gradient, hit SHIFT+G or click and hold the bucket for the gradient option to appear)

if white isn't your primary color (upper left color square at bottom of tools palette), click that square and drag the little circle to the white corner. (click ok)

now you need to select the transparency gradient - in the toolbar, under File | Edit | Image, the 2nd drop down from the left - click it and choose the foreground to transparency (white in upper left, checker board in lower left)

now move your cursor to the bottom of your picture (very bottom)
click and hold...move your mouse UP
with your other hand, hit and hold SHIFT on the keyboard

when your cursor is at the desired gradient height - release your mouse button

if it looks good, save as - don't forget to change filetype (default will be psd)
if it don't look right, hit ctrl+Z and repeat the last step.

I'm having trouble with the following:

I don't see any "foreground to transparency" option.

EDIT: Thanks for being patient with me, by the way. I am grateful.

sorry, i was tired
there are two drop down boxes in the toolbar below the FILE | EDIT | bar at the top.
the second one has the gradient options, but they're images (not text)
