How do I extend wireless coverage?

I've got two DD-WRT routers and I want one seamless network. Both are wired together so I don't know if a wireless repeater is where I want to go or if something else could work better. Do clients have to support this or can I somehow set this up so that whatever AP has a better signal is the one that gets connected to?

If both are wired establish one as the main Router, and configure the second one as an Access Point.

Give them the same SSID and different channels.

P.S. Seamless roaming with entry level devices is an Oxymoron at best you get seamless with Hiccups.
