Here is the motherboard:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/xeon/c600/x9dr3-f.cfm

There is some sort of 8x SAS port (#7 in 'Key Features' at supermicro.com) but I don't know how that would allow me to turn it into SATA ports. I've emailed Supermicro but got no response.

I was wondering if it needed the SFF-8087 connector cable. The manual did not help me either. Any insight would be appreciated.
you can use a sas to add sata disk no problem
sas is compatible to sata interface
so no need to buy an add on card to give you more sata ports
or if you still need mor ethan 8 ports then you should go with a raid add on card

Thanks but what exactly does that "x8 SAS ports" mean? Where are the 8 ports? That is what I'm confused about.

in the corner next to the 6 sata ports there are 2 ports.
thats the sas ports
you need a cable from sas to 4xsata ending to use it with sata drivers
thats why it says 8x cause every actuall port can support 4 devises via a multiline cord.

youneed a cable like this to have the sata connections
hope that help you

in the mainboard manual section 2-33 the marked as H and G
also called scu 0-3 and scu 4-7

And hoping it's not too late and you already ordered a cable or something... The retail pack of that board comes with the cables you need. See the images on NewEgg, it's the 2 grey cables w/ black ends that fan out. Presuming you don't already have a non-retail or a used mobo :)
