The question is self explanatory. I want to edit a DLL file. Is an hex editor the best tool?? What is the best tool to edit the a DLL file??

Thanks

i doubt you will find source for most any DLL, so yes on a compiled DLL a hex editor would be your best bet, that or resource hacker.

My point was more along the lines of "if you don't have the original source, you probably shouldn't be editing the dll".

but who knows what he's doing (what are you doing, alexruiz?), and for that matter who cares?

why "shouldn't" he be editing it?

Because:

A) It's not his to change. If they wanted to allow him to change it, he would have the source code.
B) Things like that eventually lead to strange problems.

technically true, you are just licensed to use most software, you dont really 'own' it, but whatever, no point in getting in a fight over software licensing, just a matter of personal preference.

yeah probably, but thats the point of being a computer dork, to tinker and sometimes mess things up, it happens.

i just figure the guy wants to know, why lecture him, just tell him what he wants to know.

There are many ways to tinker and learn without violating all your software licenses.

It's good to know all the facts surrounding an issue.

If you ask me the best way to shoot yourself in the foot, I'd probably tell you not to shoot yourself.
There are better ways to solve problems than taking extreme and/or esoteric measures.

point of being a computer dork might be to tinker and sometimes mess things up;
but the point of being a computer enthusiast is to learn what is going to mess up so
you can avoid shooting yourself in the process.

If alex had provided information as to why he wants/needs to edit a DLL he probably would have
gotten better advice on what tools to use; or better, what utilities would enable the features he
wants perhaps without resorting to editing any binaries.
