How do I dump data from a hard drive

I have a hard drive that seems to be going bad and I can't read the data of it within the operating system. I want to dump the data off the drive onto another drive ASAP to presever any dat that is left before I try and repair the drive. How can I do this?

A free way would be awsome but if I have to pay I will.
 
A lot of hard drive manufacturers have tools that will image a drive onto another one; something like that could work.

Software like Norton Ghost or Acronis Trueimage that has a bootable version is another option. Not free, though.

Assuming drivers for your motherboard are available, you could also use something like Knoppix (or another bootable Linux distro) to do a drive-to-drive copy.

However, if the actual drive hardware is bad, you may not be able to copy the data (of course, in that case there isn't much you can do yourself at all).
 
Stick it in a freezer for a couple of hours. After taking it out of the freezer, immediately stick it into your computer and transfer over what you need. This has worked for me 2 out of 4 times. You can give it a shot.
 
Maxtor Blast from HDD can clone hdd as long as you have one maxtor hdd in the system. You can get it from their homepage free.
 
Hi Jiggz, Some versions of Maxblast don't care what make drives are present, some do. Probably all makers have a similar program. Luck, Jim
