Can someone tell me what settings I need to check/uncheck in itunes in order for me to just keep apps on my iPad and not have it copy to the mobile applications folder?

I have messed around with it before and have wiped my iPad clean 2x...losing precious saved data. I don't know what I'm supposed to do...it's gotta be easy yet I'm doing something wrong here.

Edit: Ok I think I may have figured it out with some more messing around. I basically unchecked "auto syn new apps" and unchecked "Sync apps". So now it grays out the windows and I can't move icons around through itunes, but it won't override my ipad with the current library of apps in the itunes.
