How do I disconnect the extra 4 pins from my 24-pin connector

The 4-pin part snaps off allowing it to sort of dangle, but I can't see how to detatch the whole thing. Help would be very much appreciated.

Dangling is better than giving it the chop, in case you want to have a new arrival in the future.

(A new motherboard that is)

The problem is that the plastic is thick on the joint connecting the two parts, so if I pull it away it pretty much goes back to where it was before. I can keep my thumb on the 4-pin connector and plug in the 20-pin that way, but it will be rest right up to a transistor and I don't want to ruin the motherboard.

You should be able to fold it back and use a cable tie to hold it in place.
