You should be running a firewall. If you aren't, Messenger popups are a good reminder that you should be.

2 ways to do this:
1.) make sure it's not in your start > programs > startup folder
2.) open windows messenger....go to tools....options......general tab....there's an option there for "on startup", disable it.

Check online or you can always go the local warez route too for a prog called tweakXP. Not only are there options to disable messanger, there is a buttload of other stuff you can fix up. I loved it!

I renamed the folder (prog files/messenger) a month ago.

I have seen no sign of messenger ever since.

If you prefer to remove Windows Messenger click Start, Run and enter the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

This is what I do.

I don't want MSN opening itself, if I need it, I'll launch the app myself otherwise it shouldn't startup at startup.

It seems to me that some people are confusing Windows Messenger and Messenger Service...Renob appears to be talking about Messenger Service, not Windows Messenger.

rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %WinDir%infmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

What's the difference between windows messenger and the windows xp service?

Which one does the right-clicking and un-checkboxing or checkboxing remove and which one does the run command remove?

Thanks guys

This is the first thing I do when I format and do a fresh install of XP.
