When my computer is booting I get the messages "No device detected" and "No BIOS installed." Otherwise the comp runs fine and I have reason to believe that the Promise Controller is what's causing them to appear. However, I can't find a way to disable it in my BIOS. This is on an MSI K8T mobo (AMD64) using an AMI 3.31a BIOS.

Alternatively, you can RTFM.

I direct you to page 3-20.

If your board did not come with a manual, I got a copy from MSI's website. Neat, huh?

I tried disabling the PATA and the SATA controllers but that didn't get rid of it. The other (Raid) manual shows a screenshot with an option to disable the Promise one but my mobo doesn't have that anywhere.

Am I correct in assuming that this is some kind of active controller that's not being used and, as such, is returning an error?
