how do I determine which motherboard my laptop uses?

I was hoping I could update/flash the bios, but I can't seem to find any info as to which motherboard it might possibly be using. Perhaps there are programs that can retrieve this information? I'm using a Compaq Presario 1800-XL80. Also, how can I find out which version of windows I'm running (build) w/o the system information utility (I get an error everytime I run it)?

For BIOS updates check with Compaq since it's probably a proprietory motherboard.

For the windows version try typing "ver" from a dos window. Or try running winver.exe (it's in c:\windows or c:\windows\system -- I forget which)
