it is running windows 2000. winver says "version 5 (build 2195)." nothing about service pack. perhaps this is telling me this machine has had no service packs inistalled on it?? any other way to determine the current service pack? windows update indicates i need to install "service pack 2" and "service pack 3", which makes me assume i have sp1 (was there an sp1??). i have to find out the sp on over a hundred computers and would like to avoid having to run windows update on each one and then make assumptions based on what sp it says i need. also, can windows tell me the processor speed? i have found the cpu family and stepping, but not the speed. thanks.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

On the General tab, under System, it should say this:

Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack version here

If there is no line about Service Packs under 5.00.2195, then no Service Pack has been installed. Windows 2000 SP3 (and pretty much all Microsoft Service Packs) is cumulative and does not require previous service packs to be installed.

If you right click on My Computer and choose properites it should tell you if you have any service pack installed. If you were to install SP3 you wont need SP1 and SP2.
I am not at a Win2K machine right now, however by going to system tools it will give you the CPU speed.

The quickest way to determine which service pack you have is to right click "My Computer" on your desktop as suggested by the posts above this.

You can also check the:
Registry > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for Software & Hardware to see which service pack & cpu stepping/speed you have install on your system.

The quickest way to get both cpu speed & services pack at the same time is to launch System Tools > System Information.

Or indeed just open the "run" box (winkey + r) and type "Winver"
to get all the version information plus registration details and the amount of physical memory installed...

Edit:
I just noticed you used winver to check...
If it doesnt say anything about the installed service pack, you're not running one.

You can also open system information and all the details will be there on the right. I keep a shortcut to system information on my desktop. :) You can even right click it and save it as a text file.. this is what it will tell you..
