I have a check, I'm in a state that doesn't have my bank. How do I proceed here?

Is the bank the check is drawn on in the state you are in?

Check cashing place? I see them everywhere but have never gone in, so I haven't a clue how much they charge.

Check your bank's website; many of them will have addresses to which you can mail checks that you wish to deposit.

Thanks for all the info you provided for us to help you out. Some basics you should provide us are

1. What state you are in
2. Who you bank with

Which bank is the check with, and are they in the state?

You could also go to many grocery stores, or check cashing places. Wal-Mart charges a flat rate of 3$ I think? Which is good.

Pay the fee for using another banks machine.
To deposit a check? How does that work? lol

I know you could withdraw money, but I don't think I would go around sticking deposits in random ATMs...

Many financial institutions have agreements to accept deposits from other banks/credit unions and vice versa. I rarely make deposits in ATM's owned by my credit union, they have none close to me. You do need to make sure that an agreement exists between your bank/credit union and the owner of whatever ATM you use.

Forever stamp, FTW!! :)

Seriously, the various rebate checks I get in the mail just wait til I have 2 or 3 of them here, then get mailed to my bank, even though it's only 5 miles away from here. I seldom get over there, the checks often times have expiration dates, and the P.O. gets it there for the price of a 42-cent stamp.......and with gas approaching $4/gallon, that's cheaper than I could drive it there!

What bank is listed on the check? I believe that you should be able to cash it there with the proper ID.
