I have an Asus UX32VD laptop with Windows 7 64-bit.

There are now many issues:

1. The USB 3.0 ports - all of them, operate at USB 2.0 speeds.

2. When I try to install the Intel USB 3.0 Drivers (Version V1.0.5.235) I get this error:

http://s3.amazonaws.com/Paragon_Media_Storage/USB Error.JPG

3. When I plug in my Google Nexus phone it now comes up as "unknown device."

I figure the best bet is to just wipe out all of the USB drivers for the ports. And start fresh.

You can theoretically go into Device Manager and uninstall everything under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". I say theoretically because that includes the controllers that have your keyboard and mouse connected to them, so you have to do that one last. Even on a laptop, the keyboard and trackpad are connected via USB internally.

I did that, but of course Windows will then automatically re-install those drivers on the next refresh or reboot. And those were the drivers I had problems with from the very beginning. I would like to disable this automatic re-installation of those same drivers since I think at least one of them has problems, considering the error above and the fact that my USB 3.0 isn't working at USB 3.0 speeds.

So you want the system to boot with no USB drivers? That seems like a poor idea to me since you wouldn't be able to then do anything with the PC.

If they recently stopped working correctly, then you shouldn't have to totally disable them, not that you could anyway. Have you looked under Programs and Features and Windows updates for USB-specific items to remove? Have you tried the roll back function on the USB controller(s) in device manager?

The messages you have posted usually mean the drivers are not for the device on the laptop. Is it possible Asus has the wrong driver listed?

Have you tried both USB downloads listed on the Asus site?

Possibly dumb question: have you tried downloading the latest chipset drivers first?

Does the BIOS on the laptop let you enable/disable anything? Have you tried Windows update?

I looking into the BIOS and even updated it. Nothing that concerns USB other than legacy support, which is auto selected. I'll see if windows update does anything

Have you tried the V1.0.4.225 drivers listed on ASUS's support site? Curiously, they are 4 times bigger than the V1.0.5.235 drivers.

Looking at p. 57 of the owner's manual, there's some Windows "USB Charger+" settings that could/may inadvertently affect normal USB port operations.
One other solution:
create (using Notepad) a setdev.bat file with this content:

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
devmgmt.msc

Save as a .txt file, then rename the file extension to .bat.
Double click to run, then select View: "show hidden devices".
Expand each device area "+" and uninstall any greyed out (phantom) devices.

what's worked for me is to find infcache.1, delete it (take ownership 1st), then reconnect a usb device. this has never failed me in vista and win7

Better enable onscreen keyboard. Theoretically, Windows will see new hardware at boot and it will install the drivers fresh. Of course the USB3 could have been physically damaged. The USB3 plugs on the case could have been defective and causing problems.
