How do I create an online password protected folder?

I'm wondering if there is a way that I can create a folder online somewheres that is password protected. So if I went to a website, a login box would pop up and I'd have to produce a password to have access to those files.

I was thinking that I could do it by having some sort of FTP thing set up where I could access files from a server. Is this possible? If so, is this this the easiest way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? How do I keep it secure so that no one else can access it except those who have the password?

Throw in WebDAV if you want to write to it.

sftp > ftp, but requires a client on Windows.
