Howdy, this post belongs in software, not OS's...

And yes, technically it is illegal to make backup copies of DVD's since you need to break the encryption on them to do so. But as long as you legally own a copy, you shouldn't be hastled for doing it..

DVD Shrink is a great DVD backup solution. Enjoy!

I never understood this. If you take one bit and copy it over to another media exactly as it was, how did you break encryption? Same for 4.7 GB. If they are copied over bit-for-bit how was any encryption broken?

Having said that, I dont know of any bit-for-bit DVD copy programs. Except for DVD Shrink when the original disc is less than 4.7 GB. Anything over and it has to read and resample it. I'm pretty sure that qualifies as breaking the encryption.
Unless you choose to make an ISO larger than 4.7 GB.

you dont need dvd decryptor with dvd shrink. dvd shrink is capable of taking care of macrovision on its own

Bah, I think Claddvd.net is better. Look on good for it. It leaves it in it's original form and you can remove macrovision from it etc.. DVD shrink is only needed if you have a single layer drive.

nope it's not illegal and your allowed to break the encryption. It's like movie ratings, they are not the law but just a guidance. It's to prevent piracy but it's not mandated or protected by the government.

Maybe you havent heard of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act:
Highlights Generally:

· Makes it a crime to circumvent anti-piracy measures built into most commercial software.

· Outlaws the manufacture, sale, or distribution of code-cracking devices used to illegally copy software.

· Does permit the cracking of copyright protection devices, however, to conduct encryption research, assess product interoperability, and test computer security systems.

· Provides exemptions from anti-circumvention provisions for nonprofit libraries, archives, and educational institutions under certain circumstances.

· In general, limits Internet service providers from copyright infringement liability for simply transmitting information over the Internet.

· Service providers, however, are expected to remove material from users' web sites that appears to constitute copyright infringement.

· Limits liability of nonprofit institutions of higher education -- when they serve as online service providers and under certain circumstances -- for copyright infringement by faculty members or graduate students.

· Requires that "webcasters" pay licensing fees to record companies.

· Requires that the Register of Copyrights, after consultation with relevant parties, submit to Congress recommendations regarding how to promote distance education through digital technologies while "maintaining an appropriate balance between the rights of copyright owners and the needs of users."

· States explicitly that "[n]othing in this section shall affect rights, remedies, limitations, or defenses to copyright infringement, including fair use..."

The DMCA made it illegal to break the encryption on DVD's in-order to back them up. Unless they have changed the law in the last 6-8 months. Hence why DVD-XCopy was forceably removed from the market. Im not sure why how or why DVDShrink is still available, perhaps its developed outside the US's duristiction?

Opps, didnt see Need4Speeds post.

when you factor in the time it takes and materials
you'd be better off just buying another copy when it's on sale

the only thing I'd worry about backing up are vhs that aren't out on DVDs and such.

Disagree! You can buy a good burner for the price of 3 or 4 dvds, and I've been paying about 30¢ each for 8x -r discs. I have 10 grandkids. I think they have all found ways to loose or ruin dvds. Letting them use backups makes a lot of sense to me. I too use dvdshrink. Free app.

I use DVD Decrypter with DVD Shrink. Fitting everything onto single layer discs is okay with me. Dual layer discs cost more.

Not necessary to use dvd decryptor with every disc, but there are some that dvd shrink cant handle, so I've gotten in the habit of using it every time.
