How do I cool a 10K Raptor?

Right section, good question.

Search the hot deals forum for a hard drive cooler, I know cooler master makes a pretty good one for almost no cost.... I mean inexpensive.

If your case has a fan cage in front of the HD bays (mine does), then stick the largest possible fan there adn blow on the HDs.. =) Makes like a 7 - 8 degree difference C for me. Oh wait and it was 7 - 8 degrees cooler IN the case than the HD was sitting outside in a cool environment..

Obviously you will need a hdd cooler. I'm not sure what is the best out there, I thought most hdd cooler are almost similar to each other in performance. I've got a couple of hdd coolers on my hdd's and I can't seem to see the difference on which one is better.

do raptors really get that hot? would just putting then in a 5-1/4 bay with good airspace all around be ok?
I know active cooling is boss (I have it for my hds) but just wondering in general.

Correct.

Raptors do not need any greater cooling than 10krpm SCSI drives. My Fujitsu is at about 28C most times, which is well within tolerances, and warm to the touch. It's in a rack with two PATA IDE drives, stacked together (ran out of space), with an 80mm 1400rpm fan in front of them.

I have a 36GB sitting together with a Maxtor 80GB in a CM Praetorian. Although the two intake fans were set to 5V, that's more than enough air to cool 'em 🙂

I have good passive hd coolers in my FS thread. They mount in a 5.25" bay though... They are the Zalman hd coolers.

I have never used active cooling on any of my hard drives, including a number or 10k and 15k drives, unless there happened to be a fan already built into the case at that location. Hard drives can run well over 100F and be within spec. There is no need to actively cool your hard drives regardless of speed and usage unless you have awful circulation in your case.

Why bother with cooling?

I have 4 HDDs almost right on top of each other, & at the end, there's a 120mm fan blowing thru them 🙂

Raptors aren't that hot.
I have two of them in Raid 0 and they are at about the same temp as my DM10 160GB.
