how do i convert mpeg2 to .avi

i capture using the best quality on my ATI TV Wonder card. The resulting file becomes an mpeg2 and a very large file at that. How do i convert the mpeg2 to an avi file that's much smaller. What programs do i need?

LOL, its free but it doesn't support mpeg-2. Try Doom9 and VCD help there are some useful tools and guides at those sites.
