HOW DO I CONVERT DVD'S TO DIVX?

I want to have a 120gig HD with all the movies, and tv episodes, so i can have it as a server to my house.

You need to rip the VOB files and then encode them with the proper program.

Yeah, I'm ripping my DVD's to Divx for the dorm because based on my experience movies have a tendancy to disappear, so I would rather lose a .10 disc than a $20 one.

best method i've used is using nandub and 2 pass encoding with DVD2AVI

Because it's completely illegal to back up movies that you own. Especially when he expressed absolutely no intent to distribute them.

if yuo want to play around with encoding then www.doom9.net is a must vist. There's guides ,programs ( open source), forums, everthing. But to get great results lots of trial and error is needed and Encoding will require time to compress dvd to divx/xvid. But either way its always good to learn something new.

As for a simple to use Dvd to divx program , there was a one back then ,, it's call FAIRUSE. It's easy and the the quality is pretty good. but you will have to encode the sound and put it in the movie which is pretty simple to do also.

But Gordainknot is where it's at now...
