How do I control which programs run at boot time?

How do I control what programs startup on runtime?
For example when I boot my computer some programs automatically start.

I remember typing a command on the command prompt a long time ago which activated a program where I deselected the unwanted running programs.

But there is a command to enter on the start/run
that you use to select and deselect programs??????

I would rather do this than edit a file since this can usually cause more problems in the long run???

Since you have not specified an OS, it's difficult to give you what you want. Next time, please give us a little more information so that we can help you better.

n0cmonkey has given you the answer for a *NIX based OS.

For Windows 98(SE), Me, and XP, there is a command called MSCONFIG, which will bring up an applet to control startup.

This is not present in Windows 2000, so please read the FAQ: Equivalent of MSCONFIG for Win2K?
