How do I connect a Macintosh to my network?

Someone just gave me a Macintosh PowerBook Duo 280c notebook computer and docking station for free. I don't know very much about Macs, but I want to connect it to my network just for fun.

The docking station has an ethernet card/port in it, and if I connect it to my hub the link indicators on the card and hub light up. So far so good.

How do I get the Mac to see the PCs on my network and vice versa? I have Win 98SE set up with internet connection sharing (ICS), so file sharing, etc. is done via TCP/IP using the DHCP server I assume is installed with ICS.

I didn't see anything (software) on the Mac that is obvious for setting this up, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Get a copy of Windows NT Server 4.0 and install the service for macintosh; This will let you design mac volumes on the server etc... Otherwise, PC's don't normally "see" IBM compatable computers.

Thanks for the reply.

So it sounds like you're saying there is no way to use a peer-to-peer type of network with PC's and Mac's mixed together?

Dromer -

Thanks for the tip. I found their site and I'm downloading the demo right now. But US$200 is pretty steep.......

You certainly can do TCP/IP on a Mac. This is assuming you have a NIC in there. Doing network support for the last three years, the ONLY thing that I like about a mac is setting up TCP/IP. It is more intiutive than in windowz. IMHO

If you don't have a NIC, be prepared to take out a second mortage on your home, there is no such thing on a mac called cheap hardware....

Sorry-
I didn't read the entire post, you already have a NIC

Thanks for the link, I checked out DAVE, it looks like it would work, the problem is that the download file is ~6 MB, and the only way I have to get data into the Mac at this point is via floppy disk, I'll have to see if I can split it up. Or else maybe install MacLan on my PC and then copy it over.

Another potential problem I see is that I think my Mac OS is only version 7.5, and DAVE needs 7.6 or better, I think.

Thanks everyone for the pointers, keep 'em coming if you have more. I'm not going to have time to mess with this until probably next week, anyway.
