I got a HP JetDirect 300x hooked up to my HP Laserjet 1200 -- I have no idea how to configure this.

I tried holding down/pressing the test button on the server, but nothing happened.

I tried installing the printer on one of my systems, the installation program for the 1200 printer saw the print server AND the printer, installed fine, but nothing happened. (when I tried to print)

I tried installing a network printer through my network places (like if one was shared on another computer on the network), couldn't find it.

The print server has an IP from my DHCP server, (xxx.xxx.xxx.10) and has a MAC address and everything. Someone help! The user manual is a useless piece of crap.

There a different procedures for different kinds of network setups, like peer-to-peer vs. client-server, and M$ vs. Novell vs. *nix.
For instructions that detailed, check out HP.com

After you get the test page from the print server, look at the IP address assigned since it is getting one. The 300x can be confiqured using a web browser by typing the ip address of the adapter in the address field of your browser. Once it connects to the 300x you can change all the options there. If at some point it ask you for the SNMP name or Admin account you have to reset the Print Server, this can be done by depressing and holding the Test button for 5 seconds, after 5 seconds keep the button pressed down then unplug and plug the power cable back in.

make sure you have a printer in port # 1, when you press the test button it will send a setup page to this printer

Are you sure this IP is coming from "your" DHCP server. It might still be the setting from the previous user. Have you tried to ping the 300x? Where are you seeing this IP address for the Server?

First off, I would give the print server a static IP address. Since you are using DHCP now, there is no guarantee that you will get the same IP for the print server if it goes offline and this could cause problems in the future. Also, when you install the printer software there should be an option to do a Network Client Install. You will need to install the printer this way if you are not using a PC as a print server to spool documents to the HP print server. Also, the Network Client Install tells the PC that the printer is a network printer and the virtual port that it has to print to.

Hmmm

All my computers are 192.168.0.xxx where X is between 2 and 254. I know the print server is .10 because when I went to my router administration page, it showed "NPID4998A" which is 00-60-B0-D4-99-8A as a DHCP client. I only have two computers on the network right now, so I know thats it.

Download Web Jet Admin from HP Install it on your machine and do a discovery. It will find all JetDirect devices on your network and then allow you to configure them to your heart's content.

Also, while you're at HP, do yourself a favor and pick up Download Manager. This tool will allow you to check and update the firmware on your JetDirect devices. Once you install it, you can connect to the internet to get the firmware catalog and then discover the devices on your network that need upgrading.
