I have a feeling it is time for a cleaning, but don't know where to start. The K&N FAQ's most germane piece of advice was to only use their cleaning oil...

I picked up the K&N cleaner kit (includes cleaner and filter oil) at Advanced Auto Parts for ~$10. Included in the kit is directions to do the cleaning. Entire process from removal to re-installation takes 30-45 minutes.

Basic breakdown is you soak it in the soap, rinse, and then oil.

You talking for your car? I'm not sure if it works the same or not, but for my dirtbike, I just give it a quick dunk in soapy water, then I soak it in kerosene for maybe 10 minues. Then I set it out in the sun to dry. When it's dry, put some K&N filter oil on it and your ready to rock.

I got the k&n cleaning kit too. Its just a spray bottle with some soapy stuff and oil that you put on after its clean and dry. It will take more than a half an hour b/c the filter has to dry. After the soap spray soaks in you gotta rinse it out.

Why the oil I wonder? Hey Mwilding where'd you get the K&N filter for your Contour?

The most important thing to remember as you're finishing up is do not over-oil the filter.

Too much oil will cause the oil to get sucked through and into your air sensor. That often becomes an expensive and or tedious to correct mistake.

Be careful when you oil it, don't go too crazy or else you'll have a lot of it start to ooze out after a while. That's bad. You just want to ensure there's good coverage.
