<< windows does not have a built-in utility for checking uptime?? >>

Nope. You can BUY one from MS in the Windows Resource Kit or try pstools, a really useful (and free) collection of command-line utilities that MS should have included with Windows.

Interesting... I downloaded a file from Microsoft some time back called uptime.exe... I think it was part of one of the resource kits, but they offer(ed) it as a FREE download. Don't know if they still have it or not.

UPTIME, Version 1.01

That's what I get when I run "uptime /?" from the command prompt.

You should be able to still find it on Microsoft's site... if not, let me know and I can send it to you.

Dude, just go to Task Manager (right-click on the toobar). Click on the Processes tab, and then look for System Idle Process in the list. It "gets" the CPU time when the CPU is not at 100%, which is pretty much all the time. The CPU Time for this process is basically your up time. Technically it might give a value that is shorter than your actual uptime, but for all intents and purposes it's all the info you need :)
