How do I check if someone had open a credit card under my name?

Hi,

I had a suspicious call from a Bank of America's representative about 4 months ago regarding a gift package that will be sent to me next month. I thing about it is that I never got it. Now, I'm afraid that a caller claiming to be working for BoA might have stolen my identity. It's a possibility that I might have given him my SS#. So how do I check if someone had open a credit card under my name?

Thanks

You check your credit report, and examine all the lines of credit that are listed. You should recognize all of them.

Don't give your SS# out over the phone. The ONLY time it's acceptable (and I still hate doing it) is if YOU called THEM and therefore are certain that you're talking to the right company.

yea toward the bottom there should be a list of credit inquiries from various banks so see if theres one from BofA and then look through a list of your accounts, I believe it shows the dates they were opened as well as the balance owed.

1) Order a free copy of your credit report and check it at least once a year.

2) Call a confirmed phone number for Bank of America provide them with your full legal name and SSN, ask how many accounts total do they have in your name?
Or you can visit a local BOFA branch with picture ID, that's what I would do.

3) If you receive another suspicious call gleam as much information as possible. Ask them what it's for, what address do they have for you, what is their name, extension/operator/badge ID and a phone number you can call them at? If they claim to work for a company, Google the phone number and compare it with what they provided.

A few years ago I received several calls from Sprint collections for someone else. Even though I told them repeately they have the wrong phone number they kept on calling. So one time I played along they gave me the guys name and full mailing address. Then I drove to his house, rang his door bell and told him to call Sprint and pay his fscking bills. After that visit, Sprint never called again.

Nice.

He was a little confused and had a big WTF look on his face. I even wrote his Sprint account number and their phone number for him. He probably had a few choice words for them as well as they released his name, address and account number to a third party (me) who repeatedly stated they have the wrong phone number.
