How do I change the aspect ratio of an .avi file?

Ok, I have a .avi file I'd like to watch. It's supposed to be in the widescreen format, but media players seem to think it's a 640x480 file. It's not, and even if it is, I still want to strech it wider. I've ran a few searches on google, but the info I'm getting don't seem to address my needs and/or they're just too complicated for me. I'm not looking to convert it to a VCD or whatever other format. I just want to stretch the damned video and watch it. Thanks.

BSPlayer should let you choose your own aspect ratio. Can't remember the website, but that's what Google's for
