How do I change a basic user account to admin in Server2k3.

I just got my server setup with help of a friend. What I have noticed on all my computers now is I can't do squat since I am not a admin user when I log in under the users I have created.

1.) How do I go and take a normal user account and add admin uses to it?

*FIXED 2.) Why the hell is two of my of PC's taking 10mins to boot up using the same log on account as the rest of my computers. It just sits and states "Applying computer settings..." for 5-10mins? (current fast hardware, all working fine)

Linksys router and tested Cat5 cables.

Thanks.

Are you running an Active Directory domain? If you want to do admin tasks while logged in as a normal user, you can use the runas command.

For your second question, if you are running a domain, slow startup is almost always DNS. Your clients should point to the domain controller for DNS, not an external (ISP) DNS server.

Stupid question, but.. For #1, can't you just log into the server as administrator and make your normal user account a member of the Administrators group? Am I missing something?

You could do that if the machine is in a workgroup, or just AD users and computers if it is a domain account. But my impression of the original post was that the OP was asking for a way to do administrative tasks while logged in as a normal user, rather than making the user a full admin.

But hopefully eno will correct me if I'm wrong.

Well basically I have tried to log in on the server as the admin and then go under the users area of Server2003. That is basically the question I am looking to have answered, once in there what are the steps to change the basic user account for myself into a admin acccount.

And as far as the DNS, please explain further , I am such a newb to this stuff. Should I set my DNS as the server IP? Manually under each computer and set the router IP as the secondary? I only can change my TCP/IP settings if I log in as a local admin account. Make sense?

Sorry been out of the computer room due to the heat around here. Under the server rule area of Server2003 these are the options I have configured.

-File Server
-Print Server

-Domain Controller (active directory)
-DNS Server

I was able to get the two PC's to boot up quickly. I entered the DNS address followed by the standard router dns as secondary. It seems to have fixed it though, after a couple days of usage I will see if its gone for sure.

Still haven't been able to change "my" user account to a admin account. So for the mean time I have to log off the domain and log into my local admin account to make any major changes.

Your clients should have the DC as primary DNS and secondary blank. The router's IP should not be configured anywhere in TCP/IP of any machine. The only place that belongs is the forwarders tab of your DNS server.

Still haven't been able to change "my" user account to a admin account

On your domain controller, go to administrative tools, AD Users and Computers. Find your user account and double click on it. Go to the member of tab and add the administrators group.

Ok I have already found the "member of" area under the user on the server. I click the user I want to add admin priviliges to and then go to the member of tab, then type in "administrator". I have opened up my default admin user account and my user account I am trying to configure. Both now have the exact same accounts on each. Whats weird is this computer I am on now is now allowing stuff like TCP/IP changes and clock changes but when I log in on another computer with the same log in info that I am using now it still says I do not have proper privilige level to.... Why? I have tried turning off the server and each client system and still no go. Man I can't do anything with my computers till I figure this out, I can't install my temp programs or set basically anything up. I have search Microsofts site and forums and can't find anything on just the most basic task of adding admin priviliges to a normal user account. ARRRGGGHHHH!!

Sounds like the machine is not participating on the domain fully. When you log on with your account to the machine that lets to you do administrative tasks, go to a cmd prompt and type 'set log'. Does it return the name of your DC?

Now log in with the same account to the machine that doesn't let you do administrative tasks and run the same command. What does it return?

Well I typed that in and it shows logon server name which is my server name. Yeah both my laptop and desktop of the left desk "pc room pic" won't allow me to perform admin tasks even though they both are logged in as the same user that my admin working client uses.

Do all three machines show the server name for logon server?

Have you checked the event logs of the two that don't work?

Under that same name they show the same log on server. Well.... guess what. It fixed now. After I changed the settings I rebooted all the systems and it still didn't work. 1 computer did, others didn't. But then I come back to the systems 3hours later and sure enough now I have admin access. Weird.
