Our IT department started to block all ports > 10000 and they also use symantec to block web site such as ebay, gaming, adult, chat, and etc. To get around this, I set up my own pc from home for remote desktop hosting so I can access those site from work. However, in past, I was able to listen to internet radio from work, but it appears that they block that also. Is there a way go around this? Can I somehow use my home pc to connect to the internet radio and then somehow connect to it from work? Is there a eaiser way to do this or am I pretty much hit a death end. My IT guys sucks! TIA

They don't call it "work" because you get to go in and listen to your Internet radio, chat on IM and surf pr0n. Keep messing around with things you shouldn't be, and I hope you get fired.

Your IT guy doesn't suck. He's doing his job to keep the network up and available so actual WORK can get done (imagine that). I suppose you think the police officer sucks when they pull you over for breaking traffic laws. Or maybe the judge sucks because they sentence you to jail time for committing a crime?

Streaming media can take up a lot of bandwidth (which is usually very limited in office networks) and can interfere with critical business resources, and the other things you mentioned are things you shouldn't be doing at work anyway. If you really "NEED" to use any of those things, just ask the IT guy for permission. He might say yes, he might say no, but at least that way you won't lose your job for violating company policies.

And using remote desktop to violate company policy can and should still get you fired. Even though you're browsing the blocked web sites on your home computer, you are still using company resources to access the sites.

Here I am thinking you guys are network guru. With status like Lifer, Platinum, and Diamond member? What a joke!!! If you don't know how to do this, just shut up, don't pretend like you know and lecture me about work. I worked in the IT in the past, you guys sounded like those IT guys that think they know, but in reality, they don't know sh*t, just bunch of sorry no knowledge guys.

A bunch of the folks here in the networking forum are extremely good at what they do, and I find your comment to be a little out of line.

Regardless, it is a strict policy of the networking forum here that there will be NO help given to people who are attempting to bypass security restrictions put into place on a network that they do not own. Your employer's network, your employer's policies, tough.

Could the people here help you get around it? Sure. Could probably help you dismantle your employers network peice by peice and cause your IT group a ton of grief. Will we? No.

Ok, fair enough. I apologize for my comments. Unlike the other poster, I actually respected your reply. Afterall, I know I will be responsible from my action at work, we are all adults, no need to be lecture by anyone. I also know some of the people on this forum is very knowledgable from reading their posts. Just so unfortunate that some of those with so called high member status are not much more knowledgable about network than me, and I don't even deal with networks @work. I will just left it at that.

Go visit Off Topic -- you'll see people with tens of thousands of posts putting out the most inane drivel ever ;) ... Post Count does not make someone a guru.

By the way, welcome to AnandTech forums!

Somestimes you're not at the mercy of the IT guys in your company but instead 3rd party security auditors. If your company's security policies don't meet certain requirements, your company would get fined mega bucks. Nothing the IT guys can do. I'm sure they'd like to be browsing pRon and listening to music at work too.

It's nice to revisit this site once awhile. I was one of the first few people frequently visit this site back in the 90's. Anyone still remember Value America?
