I do not know what their reaction would be if you walked in and told them that you wanted to buy an iPhone 4 unsubsidized. I don't know if they would make it easy or hard is what I mean.

I was trying to order online so I could pick up at a store. I guess it doesn't hurt to call them.

As for CL/eBay, I want to use my credit card and have it in my hand to give as gift to someone.

Craigslist if you want a good deal. I picked up a iP416GB for $440 off contract. Fun little toy.

Yeah CL is the place to find a like-new IP4 <=$500.
Anytime I see one list for less than $500, you have to contact them within 30mins or else its sold.
I bought 2 recently for $475 each thats on 4.01(JB and unlockable).
The ones on 4.01/4.0 are extremely hard to find and it usually go for $600.($700 on Ebay).
- I took a chance on the first one as I knew the phone wasn't her but I unlocked it and it worked great.
- The 2nd one was located in BFE and I had to drive 50 miles to get it.
This girl paid an extra $250 to BB for some type of 2 yr protection. She could have gotten a hell lot more for the IP4.

go in the store and tell them that you want an iphone 4 without a contract. they'll sell it to you no problem (8GB 3GS, 16GB and 32GB 4).

however, if you want one that can be jailbroken/unlocked, then you have to go to craigslist or ebay. all the ones at the stores are 4.0.2/4.1 now, which you cant jailbreak/unlock.

Holy crap that off contract price makes me cry. I can't believe they charge that much for an off-contract iPhone 4.

Their price is actually higher than retail. Apple's price is $599 for the 16GB and $699 for the 32GB.

Oh I know that. I guess I should have specified that Newegg was selling them for that price. I can't believe they have the balls to do that.

Too true. And their prices are usually, you know... reasonable.

You go into the store and ask for one... It's not like it's special or anything. Apple is more than happy to sell you a phone at 3x the AT&T price. Why would you think they wouldn't?

The problem you run into is that you end up paying the subsidized contract price on AT&T's network, IIRC, they don't allow the iPhone on it's prepaid plans at all, so you end up paying for a high dollar plan that factors in the subsidized price....

This is incorrect. You can put an iPhone on gophone without a jailbreak/unlock.

Only issue is very high data charges. $20 for 100MB.

around $800 for 16gb and $1000 for 32gb. Pretty steep for a phone. But they free with contracts, and the telcos will unlock them after a certain amount of time, usually 3 months.
