You must have car insurance to get the car off the lot, but not to purchase the car. I'd contact an insurance agent, to put them on standby that you might need a binder.

First step is to make up your mind as to what you want. Then you should see what it will cost to insure. Geico will give you a quote.

[*] Try to arrange financing BEFORE you go to the dealership.
[*] Look up the actual invoice price of the vehicle, as well as TMV and make sure that you can afford it.
[*] Have Allstate, State Farm, and Geico give you a quote on the vehicle that you're interested in. For full coverage 50/100/50 is probaly the most common w/ a $500 Collision & Comp. deductible. I use 100/300/100
[*] If you aren't good at kicking tires then take someone with you that knows how to negotiate.
[*] Be prepared to waste a few hours while the salesman runs back and forth to the sales manager. :p

hell yeah dude, 'cuz if you take that car out of the lot without car insurance... and you get into a car accident and it's not even your fault, you will

1. hesitate when the person involved asks if you have car insurance
2. cops show up and arrest you
3. the car gets towed and that costs money
4. sits in the property of the tower which costs maybe a hundred dollars a day and adding
5. your record becomes crap
6. you are in jail until someone bails you out
7. you are in debt right away or lose a good chunk of $ out of your savings account
8. you can't get the car back unless you have proof of insurance
9. your insurance company you chose will charge you a lot more than what it would have been if you would have just gotten car insurance in the first place
10. you have to plead in court

11. you miss your day in court because you are trying to pay your bills by working overtime at your job
12. you go to jail for the second time
13. you have to plead in court with a harsher penalty
14. you don't have enough money, so you start selling drugs
15. the FBI track you down and you are thrown into prison
16. you become an inmate and you end up going against the good guys, Batman.. Spiderman, the X-men, you know?

17. You are miserable... you call your parents to ask them for help, they don't care because money if first priority and they ain't givin' you any. So you decide to become a bandit and you get thrown into prison, for the second time.
18. You try to make a break away... you... get caught when you try to visit your pregnant girl friend. She called the cops on you because you have a drug addiction, she thought you was going to invade her for her purse and steal her money, she barely making ends meet, she ends up becoming your x-girl friend and marries your old drop out buddy from the 10th grade.

19. Age 52 you are let out of jail with a heavy probation. You live in the projects, and you are driving a '91 Toyota 4-door.
20. You eat bread and water everyday and spend a few hours each day sleeping because you are working at a fast food chain that pays minimum wage and under the table-cash because no other job would hire you, and you were fired from several construction jobs that didn't like how you enjoyed standing around like you did in your prison cell.

21. You become a chain smoker and alcoholic because you think that these drugs that you used to sell to minors before getting caught by the FBI, would help relieve stress, but they make things worse,
22. because you are living down by the river in an old beat up trailer, wondering why your life is this way?

23. Why? Because you decided not to pay for car insurance.
